Tash McGill - The Whisky Girl

Hello! I’m the Whisky Girl.

I'm an epicurean and I write about what I taste, see, smell, touch and hear. Sometimes whisky, sometimes champagne and a fair smattering of opinion. Subscribe below to stay in touch to get everything new delivered to your inbox.

ONE NIGHT ONLY UNTIL THE NEXT TIME: Weird and wond ONE NIGHT ONLY UNTIL THE NEXT TIME: Weird and wonderful whiskies - from Nordic lands, unusual finishes, untouched spirits and wonderful experiments. We’ll go walking through the imaginations of some remarkable distillers. Delicious snack matches too. Message @clippernz directly for bookings, limited seats, don’t miss it. Next Tuesday night.
THE PRESENT FUTURE: We are in the present future - THE PRESENT FUTURE: We are in the present future - shaping the present to become the kind of history that paves the way for the future. And while I know now that I am glad to be in this moment - occasionally I am envious of those spirits writers who get to craft their work from the backbone of centuries old history. So tonight I contemplated this with an old Scotch from old tradition as I began to strategise the future of new world whisky in it’s infancy here in New Zealand. Perhaps I will enjoy history as much as I am blessed to enjoy the present. #ruminating #whiskythoughts

THANK YOU FOR FIVE YEARS: you guys have made this THANK YOU FOR FIVE YEARS: you guys have made this so much fun - sharing stories, drams, adventures and tasting notes with plenty of lessons along the way! When I first started this account I had been writing about spirits and booze for 7 years, but I still felt bold calling myself The Whisky Girl in public - it had just been a nickname amongst friends. If there is one thing I’m expert in, it’s learning — everyday, at every opportunity and from everyone I can. A lifetime love of whisky and a lifetime more to come. I can’t wait for what’s ahead! Sláinte! #whisky #nzwhisky #whiskygirl #whiskyfabric
I was delighted to find a bottle of this old frien I was delighted to find a bottle of this old friend. It’s an entry-level bottle of @oldforester but their Statesman bottling and several others have become great mid-range price points favourites of mine. Familiar elements of oak, vanilla, spice, corn and sweet tart orange. One of the things I miss most about being in New Zealand is the very small range of accessible bourbons and American whiskies. But every so often I find a sweet old friend.

Also this is an unusual cap problem. If I was in Tennessee ... we’d just take it as a sign to finish the bottle, dance and little and play some music.

RUM EXPLORATION: I am picking 2021 for rum resurge RUM EXPLORATION: I am picking 2021 for rum resurgence for sure. Not only are more craft distillers really digging their teeth into sugarcane and molasses, but I think consumers are exploring this new world with curious palates again. Rum has a tendency to roll in and out of favour depending on where you are and the season — but @ronzacapaca has always had me at hello. That’s just the beginning though and from Fiji to Haiti to Guyana — there is a wide world of flavour to explore. Tonight — Columbia, Venezuela and the Cayman Islands. #rum #spiritswriter
Remembering those days of scrambling through barre Remembering those days of scrambling through barrel warehouses and tasting new make & young spirit fondly. Although by far my favourite meditation is to take a few minutes in the racking to inhale deeply and pay attention to the wood. The cask isn’t everything when it comes to making good whisky, but while the spirit is in the wood, it’s just about the only thing.
Always a blast being with the NZ spirits family - Always a blast being with the NZ spirits family - like the @cardronadistillery team! @pfray15 has to be one of the sweetest, most genuine reps in New Zealand. And it’s a banging gin!
